Fat Kid Suit

People are kinda creeped by what I am keeping in my fridge

If you have read FAT KID SUIT lately you know that I recently started over.  One year is plenty of time to get in amazing shape.  Unfortunately it is also more than enough time to completely fall apart and double in size.

This past Saturday was the first time in a year I went to the local Farmer’s Market with the intention of buying almost ALL of my food for the week there.  I forgot just how different shopping for a true plant-based diet is…

When you truly buy enough plant calories, there is little room in the fridge for anything else!

Let me give you a tour of the fridge, which friends and family have called everything from “Gross!” to “Insane!”

Top Shelf

  • Hidden from view are amazing local dates and a couple jars of raw almond butter.
  • Tangerines
  • Apples (several varieties)
  • Snap Peas
  • Local Eggs
  • Red and Gold raspberries
  • Blackberries
  • Three colors of bell peppers
  • Red cabbage
  • Oranges

Middle Shelf

  • In what used to be the “cheese” drawer is cucumber, asparagus, broccoli, and cauliflower.
  • Hidden from view under that drawer is a huge bag of oranges, and a big bag of tangelos for juicing.
  • Sitting in water is celery and three types of carrots.

Bottom “Crisper” Drawers

  • The bottom is mostly greens.  Kale, spinach, mache, arugula, cilantro…bags and bags of greens!

In addition to the what is in the fridge we keep several bunches of bananas and a couple bottles of wine on the counter  at all times.  Next to the fridge are some little “dry” pantry shelves…

Basic staples I am using a lot of since changing the way I eat back to plant-based and including some cooked vegetables.

Some of the stuff on these shelves are left overs from different things I’ve tried and am no longer really doing.  For instance the powdered greens and greens in pill form.  As you can see from the fridge pics the focus is on fresh.

Why not 100% raw?

I am not wanting to do 100% raw right now.  By not pushing for 100% I am eating less nuts and almost no raw specialty foods.  In addition to the calories I get from raw fruits, veggies, and small quantities of raw nuts and oils–I get calories from simple cooked meals that are comprised of potatoes and other cooked vegetables, tomato sauces, and delicious fresh pesto.  I limit myself to having a few servings of whole grains and eggs each week.  The cans you see are cat food, which since October have been the only meat in the house…

In just a few weeks I have gotten off the coffee ride, am drinking a lot less hard liquor, and no beer.  Done are the nightly pizzas, the garlic bread, french fries, and junk sweets.  And guess what?  The out of control and disgusting acid reflux, which had reached a level where I couldn’t even lay flat to sleep, is 100% gone.  I am exercising almost every day now, and feel compelled to do so.  I will weigh myself soon, but from what I can see in the mirror I have already dropped a lot of toxic weight.  All thanks to avoiding industrial food and doing my best to choose the most nutrient rich foods I can eat.

  1. My refrig is embarrassed, as are the sourdough bread on the counter, the Svenhard’s cin rolls, the cola I have hidden somewhere.
I have an old wrinkled apple in sight to remind me to do better tho.

  3. Hmm . . looks less creepy than red-dyed decomposing meat slab in a a pool of blood. Different strokes. 🙂

    • CM, did you see this, I thought the juxtapose was really amazing having the split screens…one showing the “nice” paleo dinner, the other showing what even “humane” slaughter really looks like…

      • I clicked on the link before reading the “humane slaughter” . . while eating breakfast. Clicked off after the “poke it in the eye to see if it’s still conscious.” Yeah, I can’t watch those videos. Even the pictures of animal abuse / neglect / vivisection / torture make me cry.

But yes, I agree, people need to see these videos and pictures. They need to put a face on what they’re eating and learn there’s nothing “humane” about slaughter.

      • Ooh, sorry for that.

My girlfriend who is no meat, no dairy, cannot watch (or even hear from the other room) this stuff either.

It was a very poignant vid in terms of presenting what humane (i.e. grass fed) slaughter looks like. Which I found provoking because I still have this concept/rhetoric in my mind about that kind of meat being OK…

The guy who made the vid makes an interesting point when he says that regardless of factory farm VS grass fed–from the beginning the intention is profit and to do this requires some deceit. That was a different way of looking at it for me.

But again, my sincere apologies for the morning horror show.

      • No worries- I tend to click with reckless abandon. 🙂

I asked my carnivorous husband if he would like to watch a video showing what “humane” slaughter looks like. He said no. I asked him why. He said he already knew he wouldn’t like it. Then he had spaghetti with meat sauce for dinner.

  4. Looks like you are on your way Ken:) For me, a HUGE part of the battle is just being prepared. You have prepared yourself with everything you need to succeed. The last step is to prepare the food, and enjoy.

  5. Looks like a yummy week in your future. My fridge, well, it has more kid stuff in it than anything else.

It’s funny how a change in diet can affect how you’re feeling so easily. Glad the acid reflux is gone (I end up all night with heartburn when I overindulge with red wine . . . I know why I’m staring at the ceiling as I’m staring at the ceiling, if only I actually could remember that BEFORE I start over drinking).

I haven’t weighed myself since Christmas – part of me is tempted to, part of me really thinks I’m better not knowing, keeping “how I feel about myself” as a better barometer than the number on the scale. Damn curiosity may win, though.

    • I had the same issue with red wine and the GERD. I thought I was going to have to give up vino completely. Since cleaning up my diet, and eliminating dairy, gluten, processed foods, refined sugars, and meat, the acid reflux is gone even though I still drink 2-3 glasses of red wine nightly.

RE your fridge and kids, that’s funny i just had someone else tell me that today. I don’t have kids, and I can’t imagine how much more difficult any kind of dietary change and exercise would be if I were a parent.

  6. How did the week go? It looks like you had a beautiful week ahead of you. I don’t understand why anyone would be creeped out by beautiful fresh food 🙂

    • We are lucky here sort of. In Palm Springs our winter is like summer anywhere else.

So during winter we have a lot of fresh food. Unfortunatley come summer, it is scorching hot, and the farmer’s market shuts down.

      • Ah, I’m jealous… kind of lol. We get fresh produce from June through Thanksgiving. Not too bad, but right about this time of year I’m really itching for some fresh local greens 🙂
